Shape Memory Alloy Performance Research

Mathematical -> Simulation -> Thermal Testing

The intent of my project was to independently develop a mathematical model for Monte Carlo simulations to characterize an optimal setup for the OmniPod® pump system actuated by shape memory alloy (SMA) contractions. The goal was to reduce power consumption to actuate the pump to go from 3 batteries to 2. This would increase real estate in the internals of the Omnipod® for new technologies while reducing cost.

I developed a test fixture to support and verify the mathematical representation and simulation. This fixture mimicked different geometric conditions that I determined from the analysis were optimal. The fixture was also used for thermal analysis using a thermal camera on the SMA at the different conditions and measure the insulative property of the two pulleys’ materials to improve performance.
